Day 4 - Historical Downtown - St. George, Utah

Ben made dinner reservations. We showered and got ready for the second half of our day. We had a couple of hours before dinner, so we checked out a few of the historical buildings in downtown St. George.

St. George was named in honor of a Mormon apostle named George A. Smith. After urging early settlers to eat raw, unpeeled potatoes to cure scurvy, he became known as the Potato Saint. George Smith was a first cousin of Brigham Young, who had winter home in St. George from 1873-1876. We were able to stop by and walk the grounds but the inside of museum was closed.

We ventured over to the St. George Utah Temple, which was completed in 1877. This was the first completed Temple in Utah, and the third temple in the United States. It is currently under construction. The white exterior was still glowing while viewed from a distance.

The Tabernacle, opened in 1876, was a short drive from the St. George Temple. Ben and I noticed a cute town square park next door and decided to walk the grounds. To beat the heat, children cheerfully ran through water fountains and we enjoyed art instillations throughout the park. My favorite was the Humpty Dumpty "Egghead" by Kimber Fiebiger.

I knew Ben had made dinner reservations, but wasn't sure where. Ben surprised me with a reservation at Cliffside restaurant to watch the sunset. He had made a reservation outside to be safe. The tables inside seemed to be spaced out far enough. We were comfortable being seated inside to enjoy the air conditioning. I felt a little under dressed because I had packed mostly adventure clothes, but I still enjoyed the beautiful views overlooking St. George. I tried an Italian Soda and Ben got a local beer. The coconut shrimp was delicious. Ben ordered a steak and I decided I was going to get the fried chicken to compare it the fried chicken I had eaten at the Cowboy Club in Sedona. I liked the fried chicken in Sedona slightly better. It was a great dinner and we finished it with a warm cookie with ice cream on top.

I have to say Ben planned a great day and that was a perfect way to end it.
